Mariner’s Star Child Development Center Policy on Biting:

The Mariner’s Star Child Development Center understands that biting is fairly common in young children, and at some point or another, teachers and other staff members will be called upon to handle the behavioral issue of biting. Biting is something that is very painful and frightening for the child who is bitten and this may occur for any number of reasons. Biting may be a result of the child feeling curious about something, feeling frustrated, using it as a coping method, or that child seeking attention.

If an incident of biting occurs between two children the adult must first react in a calm manner and get the situation under control. At the center we are very clear, firm and calm when a child does bite and encourage the children to express their feelings and give their reasoning as to why this occurred. Parents and guardians of both children will be called and informed of the issue, and an accident report will be filed in the office and sent home to parents.

At the center, when a child bites we show disapproval and very firmly and calmly, explain to the child why biting is not allowed and why. Staff will use a personal message with the children (e.g., “Evan, you just bit Anthony. This really upsets me. Keep your hands and body to yourself.“). If the situation persists, the child will be redirected. Mariner’s Star Child Development Center staff are trained to deal with this situation. Biting is always taken seriously and staff do their best to ensure that it is stopped as soon as possible. To avoid prejudice and confrontation between families, the child names who has bitten another child will remain confidential. Parents and staff need to remember that all young children can be potential biters.

A policy on biting is very important to assure that all incidents are handled consistently by staff, including management of children and communication with parents. This policy contributes to the health and safety of the children at the center, is based on the developmental needs of the child, and uses a positive guidance approach.

This policy will be communicated to parents in the parent handbook which all parents will receive a copy of when their child is enrolled.
